Procido LLP is acting for Saskatchewan residents who are challenging Saskatchewan Power Corporation (“SaskPower”), the Crown Investments Corporation of Saskatchewan (“CIC”), and the Government of Saskatchewan in court claiming that government action to build new gas-fired electricity generation violates Charter rights to life, security of person, and equality.

The legal team supporting this action consists of many members of the Saskatchewan Bar, beyond the team at Procido LLP, but lead counsel for the case is lawyer, farmer and Professional Engineer, Glenn Wright B. Sc., M. Sc., J.D., P. Eng., who joined Procido LLP earlier this year. The case faced applications to strike at a hearing in Regina’s Court of King’s Bench on October 4, 2024. As reported by CBC that day, one law scholar suggests this “could be one that makes the annals of important cases in Canada.” The full CBC article is here: Court reserves decision on Sask. government plea to get climate inaction case thrown out | CBC News.

The case was also featured recently in the following article published by The Energy Mix: Saskatchewan Residents Challenge Gas Expansion in Climate Rights Case.

This case is one of three climate lawsuits currently making their way through Canadian courts. An important decision on the Mathur case was just handed down from the Ontario Court of Appeal on October 17, 2024, where the Court of Appeal remitted the application for a new hearing (Mathur v Ontario, 2024 ONCA 762). Stay tuned for more on this case in the future.
