Chad Eggerman presented Legal Issues in Engineering & Manufacturing in a live webinar hosted by the Saskatoon Engineering Society (SES) on August 25, 2026.

Engineering and manufacturing decisions increasingly sit at the intersection of technical judgment, contractual obligations, rapidly changing technology and legal risk. Chad’s presentation examined those risks from a practical perspective, focusing on how engineers, manufacturers and project teams can identify and manage potential liability before a problem develops into a dispute or claim.

Topics included:

• engineering liability and the professional standard of care;
• contracts, scope definition and risk allocation;
• managing changes and documenting engineering decisions;
• product and manufacturing liability;
• professional judgment, safety and escalation of concerns;
• intellectual property, confidential information and trade secrets;
• the growing use of artificial intelligence in engineering and the legal risks associated with AI-generated work;
• responding to failures, claims and investigations and preserving evidence; and
• practical risk-management practices that engineering and manufacturing organizations can incorporate into their day-to-day operations.

A central theme of the presentation was that good engineering, good project management and good legal risk management are closely connected. Clear scopes, documented assumptions, disciplined change management, appropriate escalation and contemporaneous records can significantly reduce legal exposure while also improving project outcomes.

The presentation also addressed an increasingly important issue for engineering organizations: artificial intelligence does not transfer professional responsibility away from the engineer. AI can be an effective tool for research, calculations, specifications, coding, drafting and document review, but material outputs must be appropriately verified and confidential or proprietary information must be protected.
