Procido LLP is delighted to announce that the firm has been retained to establish and act as legal counsel for the non-profit corporation, Artificial Intelligence Saskatchewan Corp. (“AiSK”). The vision of AiSK is to establish Saskatchewan as a leading hub for artificial intelligence (“AI”) innovation and application, driving sustainable growth and enhancing quality of life through technology.
Procido LLP Founding Partner, Chad Eggerman, a member of the AiSK Advisory Board, notes that “AiSK is a new organization which aims to catalyze AI-driven transformation in Saskatchewan by fostering a vibrant ecosystem of research, development, and ethical application of artificial intelligence. Procido LLP aims to transform the delivery of legal services by increasingly utilizing AI to benefit our clients. So, there is a natural alignment between our two organizations.”
Procido LLP Senior Counsel, Rob Hendry, an intellectual property (“IP”) lawyer, Canadian and U.S. patent agent, and Canadian trademark agent, with a focus on patent prosecution and large portfolio management, notes in a recent article he authored on Patents and Artificial Intelligence that there are challenges with AI that are linked directly to IP, such as attempting to patent innovations generated by AI. Rob strongly believes that IP lawyers can be at the forefront of resolving these challenges, so organizations like AiSK can flourish and encourage AI-based innovation in Saskatchewan.
Procido LLP Senior Counsel, and well-known IP and technology lawyer, Craig Zawada, K.C. notes that “many law firms seem to think that AI will require them to change the way they work in 10 years. However, the reality is that many law firms, like Procido LLP, are now recognizing that fundamental change is necessary now.”
Procido LLP Associate, Avneet Nehel, who is experienced and qualified to practice IP law in both India and Saskatchewan and who recently delivered a presentation on Intellectual Property Law in Canada to the World Business Forum in London, England, notes that “AI still poses risks to intellectual property rights, but such risks can be managed by engaging experienced IP lawyers as early as possible in the process of developing a new innovation.”
The Intellectual Property & Technology (IPT) Group at Procido LLP is the largest group of specialized intellectual property lawyers in Saskatchewan. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute our knowledge and expertise in intellectual property and technology to the emerging field of artificial intelligence in Saskatchewan being pioneered by AiSK. If you are interested in meeting some of the members of the Procido LLP IPT Group such as Rob, Craig, Avneet and Chad in person to discuss IP and AI, be sure to attend the Saskatchewan Artificial Intelligence Gathering in Saskatoon on June 6, 2024. Tickets are available here.
Procido LLP and the IPT Group look forward to acting as legal counsel and advising AiSK in the future on the fast-moving and evolving field of AI in Saskatchewan and beyond.
